M.Sc.Plant Sciences

With six institutes and over 20 research groups dedicated to plant sciences, the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn is an excellent place to expand the frontiers of knowledge on fundamental and applied aspects of plant sciences.

In this research environment, the M.Sc. program “Plant Sciences” at University of Bonn has developed into an internationally distinguished master program that provides students from around the world with an high-level education at one of the leading universities in Germany.

The curriculum of the 2-year international M.Sc. program is fully taught in English and offers lectures as well as a wide selection of electable laboratory courses in the areas of:

Plant Physiology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology
Transgenic Plants
Plant Biodiversity, Systematics and Evolution
Plant Cell Biology
Plant Biotechnology
Ecology and Conservation.

A catalog of 30 modules is offered during the three semesters of study time followed by the Master thesis in the fourth semester. The program is fully modularized to provide optimal choices of courses and maximal flexibility according to the European Credit Point Transfer System (ECTS). Students collect a total of 120 credit points (CP) to obtain their Master degree, i.e. 30 CP per semester. Additional courses agreed upon on an individual basis can be attended at co-operating non-university institutions, e.g. Forschungszentrum Jülich (Research Center Jülich) or Max-Planck-Institut für Pflanzenzüchtungsforschung, Köln (MPI for Plant Breeding Research, Cologne). These courses will be credited for the student’s M.Sc. program. Modules accomplished in accredited M.Sc. programs at other EU universities complying with ECTS will likewise be recognized.

Students finishing their M.Sc. Plant Sciences program have excellent opportunities to start a Ph.D. project in Bonn or at a research institution close by. The M.Sc. Plant Sciences program co-operates with the Max Planck Institute for Plant Breeding Research in Cologne and with the Universities of Cologne and Düsseldorf, which offer additional opportunities for Ph.D. projects.
